India's power sector was traditionally regulated, with consumers required to purchase electricity from state-owned discoms with monopoly control. The 2003 Electricity Act introduced competition by allowing consumers with over 1 MW load to choose their electricity supplier. This reform also mandated renewable energy procurement, enabling consumers to reduce costs, enhance reliability, and meet Renewable Purchase Obligations through open access.
