Redesigning day-ahead electricity markets in India
Electricity distribution companies (discoms) in India primarily rely on long-term contracts to meet daily power demands, scheduling supply on a day-ahead basis. However, real-time demand fluctuations lead to inefficiencies. A proposed centralized day-ahead market would allow discoms to source power based on cost-effective bids, reducing inefficiencies and financial strain by ensuring the cheapest power is dispatched first.
